Target just reported a $500 million increase in retail theft at their stores by organized crime rings, pushing its overall retail “shrinkage” to over $1 billion. The same upsurge in retail theft is happening throughout the country, underscoring the need for an increase in security efforts including retail security guard patrols.
Organized Crime Ring Theft On The Rise. According to the National Retail Federation, external losses cost retailers about $35 billion. Target says robbers are becoming more bold and violent.
What can a retailer do?
–Discuss your store layout with a security specialist who can suggest ways to position products, checkout stations and employees in the store to discourage theft.
–Add security guards who are assigned to entrances and among the merchandise. If they observe someone shoplifting, they will take immediate action. Your store employees will not need to put themselves at risk to try to stop criminal activity.
–Add security cameras with feeds that are reviewed offsite in real-time. If the camera monitors see something suspicious, they contact onsite guards for quick action.
